Answers to Common Printer Repair Questions

  • August 15, 2018

Printer problems can turn a great day into one filled with frustration. As with any technology issue, when a business’s printer doesn’t cooperate, productivity takes a nosedive.

Unfortunately, solving common printer repair issues is not common knowledge.

Some fixes are quite simple while others are complex, so it’s critical to know when to enlist the help of a professional. Trying the DIY approach to correct a printer issue might cause more problems—and possibly even ruin your machine!

To help you understand when an issue warrants the help of a technician, we’ve compiled a list of FAQs about common printer problems.

Printer Problem FAQs

Why do I have light prints?

A low toner cartridge, dirty scanner, or worn transfer roller could cause light prints. We recommend replacing the toner cartridge first. If that does not resolve the issue, then call for a service tech to troubleshoot and find the faulty part.

I’m getting blurry or fuzzy prints, is there an issue with my printer or my toner?

Blurry prints can be caused by either of two components – the toner cartridge or the fuser assembly. They can also be caused by damp paper or having the incorrect paper settings for the paper you are using. We recommend checking your paper and settings first and then replacing the toner cartridge. If neither of those fix the problem, then call us to inspect the fuser assembly and replace it if necessary.

How do I clean up a toner leak in my printer?

A special vacuum is needed to clean up a toner spill inside of a printer. Do not use a standard vacuum, because toner may melt on its motor and cause your vacuum to stop working. Also, do not use compressed air because blowing toner throughout a machine can cause more damage.

We recommend calling us to clean up a large toner spill.

Why are my pages coming out wrinkled?

Worn rollers or a worn fuser assembly could cause wrinkled pages. Both of which, would need to visit from a technician to replace the worn-out part. Wrinkled pages could also be caused by damp paper, that happens when your paper sits in the machine or on a shelf too long and absorbs moisture.

How do I stop my machine from jamming?

Check to make sure there are no loose pages stuck inside the printer blocking the print jobs as they try to come through. Several parts in the printer, which might be worn or failing, could cause jamming. You can also make sure you are not using old paper and the paper settings are correct. We recommend calling us to troubleshoot and fix the issue.

How do I clear a paper jam?

We recommend removing the jammed sheet of paper in the natural path it takes to exit the printer. If you pull the sheet in the opposite direction, you might cause the printer’s sensors (which are designed to move in only one direction) to break.

How do I know if it’s better to service my machine or replace it?

We will guide you in determining which will make the most sense for you. Sometimes, replacing a printer is more efficient (and ultimately more cost-effective) than repairing it. We will let you know the price difference between repairing and replacing your machine so that you can make an informed decision.

There is an error code on my printer, what does that mean?

Error codes are the printer’s way of telling you what’s wrong with it. Call us to share the code your printer is displaying, and we will identify its meaning and diagnose what repair will be needed.

How can I talk to a service technician to get more specific information?

Laser Lab service technicians are happy to offer troubleshooting information specific to your machine and the problem you are having. To speak to one of our team members, contact us at 717-738-3333 or email Service@laser-lab.com.

Where to Turn When Printer Issues Are Plaguing Your Business

While you might find some answers to machine problems online, you will not find information about all of the issues concerning the brand and model of your printer by doing a Google search.

If you are having a printer problem that you’re struggling to troubleshoot and solve on your own, don’t waste more precious time or risk damaging your machine. Contact Laser Lab for the professional help you need and answers to all of your printer repair questions and concerns.
