When Is Windows 7 End of Life? What Should You Do Now?

  • November 8, 2019

In a blog post earlier in 2019, we discussed the impending Windows 7 end of life date scheduled for January 14, 2020. As the new year approaches, we want to revisit the topic so that you can make an informed decision about how you want to move forward if you’re still using Windows 7.

What Does Windows 7 End of Life Mean?

Microsoft will discontinue all support, including paid support, for Windows 7. It will also cease all software updates, including security updates. You will still be able to run Windows 7 after January 14. However, you will not be able to get support from Microsoft for that product, nor will you receive security updates to protect your computers running Windows 7 from cyber threats.

After Windows 7 end of life, you will use the operating system at your own risk. With no security updates, your computers and data become substantially more vulnerable to viruses and malware. Windows 7 users will be especially vulnerable to zero-day exploits, cyber attacks that hackers launch on January 14 to immediately target computers using the operating system. Unfortunately, with support and security patches no longer available for Windows 7, it will be just a matter of time before your computers and data become compromised.

How Can You Keep Your Business Safe After Windows 7 End of Life?

Transitioning your PCs from Windows 7 to the Windows 10 operating system will ensure you get ongoing support and updates from Microsoft. Going from Windows 7 to Windows 10 will not automatically happen on your computers, though. Action is required on your part.

Options for Switching from Windows 7 to Windows 10

You have two choices for changing from Windows 7 to Windows 10:

  1. Keep your current computers and upgrade their operating system to Windows 10
  2. Upgrade to a new computer – This may be the safest and easiest way because all new PCs come with Windows 10 already installed.

What are the Benefits of Windows 10?

Consider these advantages of Windows 10:

  • You get the Windows 10 robust feature set designed to help you manage your time, increase security, and get more creative. For example, Windows 10 allows you to paste from your cloud clipboard, automatically back up your folders, make your pointer easier to see, and pause software updates to when they’ll be most convenient.
  • You get automatic data sync between your PC and other devices, including syncing to Android phones (7.0 or later).
  • Windows 10 makes it easy to keep your PC up to date and safe. It automatically checks for the latest updates, ensuring you get the most recent security enhancements.

About Windows 10 Security Advantages

Windows 10 includes Windows Security, which provides the latest antivirus protection. Devices with Windows 10 are automatically protected. Windows Security continually scans for malware, viruses, and security threats. Also, it keeps you in the know about your antivirus protection by showing you:

  • When your device was last scanned for threats.
  • When your Windows Security definitions were updated to protect against newly developed viruses and other threats.
  • When your device’s operational performance and health scan was run.

What Else Should You Know About Windows 7 End of Life?

Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 will also experience the end of their support lifecycle on January 14, 2020. That means the end of regular security updates and support for those products.
