About the Microsoft Windows 10 Update
A Matter of Security
If you have PCs that are running Microsoft Windows 7 and haven’t already updated your PCs to Windows 10, you will want to make the change soon. On January 14, 2020, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates for or support PCs running Windows 7.
Windows 10 is the latest version of Windows and is not a part of a typical “update”; action is required because the upgrade won’t happen automatically. This is important to know because PCs that run Windows 7 after January 14 next year will no longer receive important updates to help keep their equipment and information safe from security risks and viruses. Businesses especially need to keep their computers up-to-date and secure because even a small breach can cause devastating outcomes for the company and customers.
According to Microsoft’s website:
“Windows 10 is the most secure Windows ever built, with comprehensive end to end security that covers antivirus, firewall, internet protections, and more. This means more security features, dashboard displays, and ongoing updates to help safeguard against future threats.“
Plus a Bonus Benefit – A Productivity Boost
You may be thinking, “What a hassle!” But you have a lot to gain with this change. At a recent event that our team attended, a Microsoft representative spoke about the advantages of switching to Windows 10. He shared that a new computer running Windows 10 can save a company over $1,200 annually by preventing the productivity bottlenecks that happen when using 4+-year-old Windows 7 devices. Windows 10 allows workers to finish projects faster because it increases processing speed, hastens the time to boot up, and provides the ability to run more programs simultaneously.
Who Has to Switch to Windows 10?
If you are running Windows 10, you are good to go because you’ve already made the switch. Kudos to you!
If you are unsure which operating system you are running on your computer, follow these steps to find out:
1. Press Windows+R to open the Run box.
2. Then type msinfo32 and press OK.
3. Near the top of the window that opens, you will see details about your machine, including which operating system it is running.
If your PC is running Windows 7, you’ll want to prepare to switch to Windows 10 before January 14 next year. Otherwise, although you’ll still be able to use your computer, you will put yourself in danger of debilitating cyber-security threats.
What Are Your Options for Switching to Windows 10?
There are two options for switching from Windows 7 to Windows 10
- Keep your current computer and upgrade your operating system
- Buy a computer that’s running Windows 10
The first option is less than ideal. You would need to purchase Windows 10 for your existing computers, and putting money into older PCs almost never pays off.
The safest and simplest option is to upgrade to a new computer because all new PCs come with Windows 10 already installed. We recommend this option because machines must meet certain specifications to run Windows 10. In fact, experts suggest that it’s best to have a PC that goes above and beyond the required specifications to ensure optimal speed and efficiency.
Where Can You Turn to for Help When Upgrading to Windows 10?
Regardless of which option you choose for switching from Windows 7 to Windows 10, consider hiring an IT professional to help you make the change. Upgrading the operating system on older machines can be complicated, and the process will go more smoothly if you involve an expert. If you decide to purchase new computers, a knowledgeable resource can help ensure you buy PCs that will meet the needs of your business.
